220 million children in India vulnerable to climate disaster and poverty

This has been said in a new study. The report titled ‘Generation Hope: 2.4 billion reasons to end the global climate and inequality crisis’ said nearly 350 million children across Asia are vulnerable to both poverty and climate disaster, including 222 million in India.

India tops the global in terms of the total number of children facing this ‘double threat’ of poverty and climate disaster. The report said that 351.9 million children in India are estimated to be affected by at least one extreme climate event a year, some of them at particular risk, as they are living in poverty and therefore have fewer resources to protect and recover themselves.

Globally, 774 million children fall into this high-risk group and even high-income countries are not immune to this “double threat”, it said. The report said that 121 million children facing both climate disaster and poverty live in high-income countries and four out of 10 (12.3 million) of them live in the US or the UK.
